Quieting Cars With Plastic

The plastic industry plans a quiet assault on Detroit. Owens Corning Automotive (OCA) has launched a campaign to shake the steel out of mufflers. The replacement material is a plastic composite that’s resistant to high temperatures. Beyond its weight savings, plastic offers more design flexibility. Future mufflers could be smoothly integrated into the shape of the car, according to an OCA spokesman. Watch for plastic exhaust systems in concept cars.

Plastic mufflers and catalytic converters would produce a flat undercarriage.
